While we will dive deeper into the question of what makes a godly mother, we can start with a short, simple answer: a godly mother is one who reflects the love of God to her children.
She cares for her children, protects them, and influences them by example with the power of the Gospel.
They are willing to sacrifice whatever is necessary for the betterment of their children and to fulfill God’s calling upon their life.
A godly mother has a deep and profound relationship with God, one that inspires everything she does as a parent. She lives by the words of
A godly mother draws all of her strength, energy, and love from the Lord.
A godly mother is devoted to her marriage and family.
She understands that her family and marriage are gifts from the Lord and seeks to please Him as she lives out those areas of her life.
A godly mother embraces God’s Word and understands her identity in the new life she has received in Christ.
These words define her understanding of herself. She likewise instills the same sense of identity in her children and continually teaches them of the power they have as children of God.
A godly mother is secure in her faith and builds her family upon that firm foundation.
Her strength and wisdom lead her to success in all she does as she follows the leading of the Holy Spirit in her life.
Moses’ mother, Jochebed, was a Hebrew woman living in slavery in Egypt before the exodus. She had three children that we know of: Moses, Miriam, and Aaron.
Moses was born during a troubled time for the Israelites in Egypt. The king had decreed that midwives were to kill all Hebrew boys when they were born, leaving only the girls alive.
This program was Pharaoh’s attempt to control the population of the Israelites, who were strong and growing in numbers in the land of Egypt.
There was a rebellion against this murderous decree in many quarters. The Hebrew midwives refused to participate in the infanticide and deceived Pharaoh so they could avoid killing the baby boys.
Moses’ mother Jochebed hid Moses in a basket of bulrushes and set him afloat on the Nile River to save his life.
Even Pharaoh’s own daughter disobeyed the decree when she found Moses in the basket and took pity on him, adopting him as her own child.
Moses was raised as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, and it was also Pharaoh’s daughter who named him.
Jochebed, in an astonishing example of God’s providence and mercy, became Moses’ nurse and was paid by the king for her service.
All of this was only possible through the love and sacrifice of Jochebed.
She found herself in a horrifying situation that would bring most of us to our knees. The Pharaoh, who held complete power and influence, ordered that all male babies be killed.
Could you imagine the terror she faced at possibly losing her son?
But, in the face of it all, she stood tall and found the strength to do what needed to be done, even at a dear cost to herself.
We can all find inspiration in her profound example of motherhood and the courage she showed in saving her son.
Could you imagine the pain she faced as she was about to give up her child?
But her deep and profound love for him gave her the strength to do it. She ultimately knew that it was what was best for him, so she trusted God and let go.
Her trust in God led not only to Moses’ safety but also to his prosperity. Not only that, but God brought her joy by allowing her to be part of Moses’ life once again later on.
We live in a tough and cruel world. Sometimes moms have it the hardest. That’s why we must trust God in everything, especially the protection of our children.
That’s why we must also celebrate all the moms in our lives.
God has called us all to love and protect our children in a way that reflects His love and care.
